Credit & Values
What can we each take credit for in our lives?
Certainly we can’t take credit for that which we inherited through nature.
We did nothing to earn our IQ.
We did nothing to deserve our good looks.
And we can’t take credit for that which was fostered within us through nurture.
Our creativity and resiliency and ambition were cultivated by the environment around us.
Can we take credit for the grit and discipline with which we push forward upon our goals? Or the compassion and empathy with which we approach others?
If we are each a product of nothing more than nurture and nature — both of which are out of our control — then it seems to me that we cannot take credit for our discipline or compassion either.
What can we take credit for in our lives?
We are each made unique at the most fundamental level by our personal values. As I discussed in Blog Post 7, it’s important for us to reflect upon and define what these are. These values are a reflection of our unique life experience. They dictate how we believe we should live in this world, given what we’ve come to know about it.
If there’s anything we can take credit for, it is our commitment to embodying a life that is aligned with these values.
